I catch myself

I catch myself looking at photos of people back home

Not looking at the people involved, but the mountains behind them

I catch myself clicking through looking at the sunsets

Dreaming about the colours that display themselves in the fall

I catch myself rubbing the back of my three year old remembering the times of when my Maw Maw use to do the same

And now I no longer have the privilege of seeing her again

I catch myself in a daze as I drive over the bridge to work, imagining I’m on the road headed home

Only to remember that I’m oceans away

I catch myself smelling the air

Remembering the honeysuckles that I used to taste at Grandma’s

I catch myself wanting to call my parents

Only to realise that it’s midnight in Virginia

I catch myself

Wanting moonshine

Wanting Chick-fil-a

Wanting sweet tea

Wanting corn bread

Wanting biscuits and gravy

Wanting to see the American flag flying out the front of my house

Wanting to raise my hand and wave at the people as they pass by on the backroads

Wanting to smell the weird disgusting smell of cow manure in the spring as the farmers just laid their fertiliser

Wanting people to speak in pounds and miles

Wanting to turn right on red

Wanting to have more than the legal amount of alcohol poured into my drink without being charged extra for it

Wanting to show the ones I love the most how much I have grown

Wanting to hug my parents

Pat my pets

Run on the trails

Bike down the hills

Sled in the snow

Taste the rain

I catch myself

Wanting

Remembering
